2cm Silestone countertops are a win-win for all

By Carmina Mendez
January 18, 2010

Upgrading countertops is still popular and homeowners are being smarter when deciding to replace. They shop around for the best deal and, if you win the sale, you end up sacrificing your profit. The good news is, you can offer the best deal, offer the product they want and put more money in your pocket!
You can benefit from the 2cm thick materials that have recently become very popular markets where 3cm solid countertops were preferred, such as Wisconsin, Illinois and the East Coast. The look and performance remains the same, but there are a couple of advantages that makes 2cm materials an attractive choice.

Thin is hot
You just have to see what’s cooking in Europe to know what will be served in America in a few years. 2cm has been the everyday stuff, and now the hot trend is 1cm countertops with no lamination or build-up of any kind. The look is streamlined and smooth. The thin edge makes it appear almost like the top is floating. In the US, the slender look is fine for vanity tops, but is yet to be considered a good option for kitchen countertops. Since the introduction of Silestone quartz, half the country, including markets like Minnesota, California, Texas, Florida and practically the whole South, has been using 2cm surfaces instead of 3cm, offering the 4cm edge, or 1 ½” laminated edge, to make the tops look thicker and to offer more edge profiles.

A great option for remodeling projects
Laminated edges work great in remodeling projects and more designers in Wisconsin are going with 2cm Silestone, finding some advantages with the laminated edge, like…

• When the thickness of the new countertops has to match the height of the old laminate tops
• When cabinets are not level and shims and gaps need to be covered
• When weight is an issue
• When island or snack bar supports must be concealed
• When a special custom or thicker looking edge is in desired

Architects also prefer 2cm thickness for most commercial projects because of the design flexibility to create different applications and even thicker edges and aprons.

Same fine look and performance plus sustainability
If you compare the look of Silestone countertops in two kitchens, one with 3cm edge and one that has countertops with 4cm edge, the only difference will be in the undermount sink cut out area, that is thinner than the top edge, and the slightly thicker look of a 4cm edge that is a ¼” thicker. The rest of the features remain the same:

• High quality, strength and durability.
• Low-maintenance features of quartz
• Silestone’s amazing color palette
• 15-year manufacturer warranty
• One-year installation warranty
• The unique advantage of Microban antimicrobial protection that only Silestone provides

Plus, 2cm is a greener alternative because less energy is used when being manufactured and transported.
